Sunday, October 25, 2009 Tobacco Conference Follow-Up Report

If present trends continue there will be one billion tobacco related deaths in the 21st Century. Harry Alan Lando, Distinguished International Professor, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota, has spent most of his career researching methods to help people quit smoking. In recent years he came to realize this was not adequate to address the global tobacco epidemic and that tobacco is a human rights issue. Alan will provide a review of the world tobacco conference in India that took place in 2008 and which he helped organize.

Thérèse Jacobs-Stewart has been a practicing psychologist, workshop developer, and international consultant for more than 20 years. She is the author of Paths Are Made by Walking: Practical Steps for Attaining Serenity — a unique synthesis of science and spirit which offers 20 basic practices designed to establish more healthy emotional responses to the stresses of everyday life. She is currently working on a new publication, and will share some of that work with Groveland at this service.

Please join Chillon Leach, St. Paul artist, for a creative time of making prayers/thoughts/intentions visible. These are fun art exercises done with prayerful intent, using simple art supplies. All the exercises have to do with slowing down, keeping a prayer/thought in mind before, during and after. No art skills or experience needed!
Chillon Leach is a St. Paul artist who shows her works in local religious and secular art exhibitions. She is a 1983 graduate of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, with degrees in painting/drawing and illustration. Currently teaching art and spirituality at Catholic Eldercare in NE Minneapolis, she is also developing forum speaking and artist-in-residence programs at area churches.

Note, there will be a potluck before this service beginning at 6:30 p.m. Solstice Service will begin at 7:15.
No one is really sure how long ago humans recognized the winter solstice and began heralding it as a turning point -- the day that marks the return of the sun. Many, many cultures the world over perform solstice ceremonies. At their root: an ancient fear that the failing light would never return unless humans intervened with anxious vigil or antic celebration. Join us for our own celebration of the return of sunlight.

Unitarian Universalists from the Twin Cities have put together a program of readings/reflections/songs and discussion questions around our heritage of Unitarian Universalism. This program is designed to be presented before and after a small group potluck. The authors hope that this can become an annual ritual for U.U.'s around the country.
We will start with readings and a potluck brunch at 8:30 a.m. For those who can only come at the regular time at 10:15, we will continue the readings and reflections as part of our regular service, and finish by 11:15.
